About this siteFor six years, the Internet Nexus served as my technology blog, but I've since started blogging at the SuperSite Blog instead. If you're looking for the blog, please head there. --Paul Wednesday, September 19, 2001Word of the day. We've all heard of deja vu (a sense of familiarity in a strange place) and though some people humorously (but incorrectly) call its opposite "vuja de," there really is a phrase that describes a sense of strangeness in familiar surroundings. It's called jamais vu. [ Posted at 11:27 AM | Permalink ]
Tuesday, September 18, 2001I had forgotten how good William Peter Blatty's Legion was (I'm re-reading it now). A must read, if only for the excellent ruminations on good vs. evil. Meanwhile, I'm having a hard time getting into The Talisman, which I'd read before and enjoyed: I'm trying to re-read it so I can read the sequel, The Black House, which was just released. We'll see. Monday, September 17, 2001Played golf today for the first time in over a week. My heart wasn't really in it, but I want to keep up on it. I also finally bought that set of Wilson clubs from the golf pro I've been taking lessons with in Dedham. $600 plus $25 for a nice putter. We'll see if I'm still golfing in the Spring I guess. [ Posted at 4:55 PM | Permalink ]One of my pet peeves: People just don't care enough about each other. But there are signs that this is changing, at least temporarily. In New York City, where cabbies would sooner run you down in the street than be 30 seconds late, people are starting to show a kinder, gentler side in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks. This could be the bright side of an unspeakable tragedy. Let's hope it lasts. [ Posted at 10:49 AM | Permalink ]
Sunday, September 16, 2001I should at least mention the reason I started this blog. About a year ago, I read a fascinating book about computers called In the Beginning Was the Command Line by Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash, Necronomicon, etc.). After a decade of using and evangelizing the Macintosh, Stephenson turned to Linux and its command-line oriented user interface for a variety of reasons that are wonderfully described in the book. I agree with most of Stephenson's assertions in this book, and recommend it highly. And I was surprised recently to come across a blog called Winterspeak that touts many of the same ideals. Like the Stephenson book, this site is required reading, and something I will return to again and again. And this site, like the book, is reshaping the way I think about computing.
