About this siteFor six years, the Internet Nexus served as my technology blog, but I've since started blogging at the SuperSite Blog instead. If you're looking for the blog, please head there. --Paul Thursday, August 29, 2002Netscape 7 is outAnd I have a bad feeling that it's not going to be great, based on the fact that it only had one preview release. However, I'm downloading it now to find out. I can pretty much tell already that I'm going to need to find some hacks to return Mozilla functionality like pop-up ad killing, but you never know. [ Posted at 11:15 AM | Permalink ] Mozilla Calendar for OS X It's out! Calendar appears to only support OS X 10.2 right now, but I'll have that installed soon enough. Wednesday, August 28, 2002The problem with LinuxIn this article, we learn the steps one needs to go through to get Linux installed on a Compaq Presario 711 laptop: Identify the graphics chipset, which can't be auto-detected by the latest Red Hat version on the planet, manually install the ACPI power management tools so the device doesn't burn a hole in your leg, try but fail to enable software suspend mode (heck, who needs it?), manually install crucial features like modem support and sound playback, manually install a battery monitoring applet, manually enable user access to the USB ports, try but fail to get Linux to access the Presario's special keys, and find and then install the secret (but illegal) software required to playback DVDs under Linux. Or, you could try the Windows XP approach, which amounts to turning on the laptop. It just works. And this, folks, is the problem with Linux. The author didn't even mention other important features like wireless networking and Windows interoperability, which are huge issues for many people, including me. And until the Linux community fixes these and many other similar issues, Linux on the desktop (or, ahem, laptop) will remain a pipe dream. [ Posted at 11:48 AM | Permalink ]
Tuesday, August 27, 2002Mozilla 1.1 is outAnd it rocks. Even better news is that work is now progressing on an OS X port of the Mozilla Calendar component. As noted by Mike Potter, who maintains the Calendar project, "Work has also begun and is progressing on an OSX build. It should also be noted that Apple announced a new calendar, iCal, which uses the same backend calendar format as Mozilla calendar. Hopefully we'll be able to interact with their files as well." Speaking of Mozilla, this excellent add-in returns the Home button to the main toolbar, where it belongs. Now if we could just return the Address Bar to its own toolbar, this thing would look perfect. [ Posted at 11:00 AM | Permalink ]
Monday, August 26, 2002Apple switcher wants to switch backFrom Salon: "My name is Astrid, I'm an Episcopal priest, and I've been a Switcher for about two months now. I guess I would call myself a victim of the Switch campaign, and I'm still trying to figure out what led me to convert. Was it my weaker nature? And yes, I confess ... I wanna go back!" LOL. There are going to be a lot of people like this, because the Mac really isn't for everyone. Try before you buy. [ Posted at 12:17 AM | Permalink ]
