About this siteFor six years, the Internet Nexus served as my technology blog, but I've since started blogging at the SuperSite Blog instead. If you're looking for the blog, please head there. --Paul Coming soon: Everything Must GoThe next edition of "Everything Must Go" will be appearing here soon. --Paul Tuesday, November 12, 2002KDE 3.1 almost doneThe Linux desktop environment that wants so badly to be part XP, part OS X has reached the RC2 stage. KDE 3.1 features a new default Crystal theme that should keep Redmond's and Cupertino's lawyers busy, nice anti-aliased fonts, and the usual rigamorole. I'm not sure that Linux will ever truly make it on the desktop, given the unbelievable advances Microsoft and, to a much lesser extent, Apple are making these days. But KDE 3.1 still reeks of copycat to me, and that's just not that interesting. It's run by Curtis Sasaki, now VP of Desktop Software at Sun, a one-time Apple employee who was around for the original Mac launch and oversaw the development of the IIGS. Anyway, the Madhatter desktop will include GNOME, Evolution and StarOffice running on SunRay hardware, with back-end management software. It will never fly. [ Posted at 9:34 AM | Permalink ] Whither OpenOffice.org? After making a big splash this past spring, things have been awful quiet in the OpenOffice.org camp. Lately, however, there have been some signs of life. The OpenOffice.org community announced recently that it has registered over 5 million downloads of its 1.0 product. More important, of course, is the future, which includes an OS X version, numerous global native-language versions, and bundling in various Linux distributions. [ Posted at 9:32 AM | Permalink ] Mac OS X 10.2.2 released Apple quietly posted a major OS upgrade today, which includes updates to Address Book, iChat, IP Firewall, Mail, Print Center, Rendezvous, Sherlock and Windows file service discovery, as well as the updated services previously delivered in Security Update 2002-09-20. But the big news with this release is the inclusion of a journaling file system, which can only be enabled through a bizarre command line. When enabled, it's possible to store a history of file system changes and return to a previous point in time in the event of a disaster. You know, kind of like System Restore on Windows.
