About this siteFor six years, the Internet Nexus served as my technology blog, but I've since started blogging at the SuperSite Blog instead. If you're looking for the blog, please head there. --Paul Coming soon: Everything Must GoThe next edition of "Everything Must Go" will be appearing here soon. --Paul Friday, December 27, 2002Triumph of the Nerds ... a triageI got Triumph of the Nerds on DVD for Christmas and started watching it tonight. It's a real blast from the past, and much of it is quite good. But then, just 6 minutes into it, there's the untalented Christine Comaford. I remember hating her for some inexplicable reason the first time I saw Nerds, and the old feelings are still very much there. Maybe it's her childish, Martha Quinn-like emoting, her gee-whizz "I was there at the beginning" hogwash (she wasn't), or the constant name dropping ("so then I told Bill..") but there's just something about that woman.... so I looked her up. And two things came out of just ten minutes of research: a) Despite getting way too much screen time in Nerds, she's a has-been now (thank God), and b) she's part of a cult. So I was right all along about that freaking weirdo. [ Posted at 9:51 PM | Permalink ]
Wednesday, December 25, 2002Yet more about why Linux isn't readyUnlike the article mentioned two blurbs below, this one is actually good reading. But even good ol' Nick Petreley can't escape the problems inherent with Linux. Consider this sentence, in which he describes his PC: "...I had Mandrake 9.0 up and running on my 1-GHz Athlon, based on the Asus A7M266 motherboard. The machine has an NVidia GeForce 3, Intel Ethernet Express Pro 100, Sound Blaster Live!, ATA100 disk drives and 512 MB of DDR RAM." That's nice. Now consider how a Windows user would describe the same box: "I have a PC. Everything works." [ Posted at 2:14 PM | Permalink ] Red Hat Linux 8.0 in Virtual PC 5.x Speaking of Linux and "doesn't work," I can't get Red Hat Linux 8.0 to install on Virtual PC for Windows. It just crashes about half way through disk two. Weird. [ Posted at 2:09 PM | Permalink ] More on why Linux isn't ready In this ridiculous article, we learn about someone who wants to use a digital camera on Linux, but he's worried that CompactFlash support in Linux is sketchy. "What I want to be able to do," he writes, "is just buy the darn thing if I like its picture quality and specs and worry about getting it to work with Linux later. Seven massive Web pages later, he sort of figures it out. I have a wacky idea: Use Windows. It just works. Moron. [ Posted at 2:09 PM | Permalink ]
Monday, December 23, 2002New Red Hat Linux betaI'm not sure what they'll call this one--probably Red Hat Linux 8.1--but Red Hat is cranking up the beta machinery yet again with a new release, code-named Phoebe. New features include Mozilla 1.2.1 with anti-aliased fonts. Linux Today has the info and download links. Chimera 0.6 includes stability improvements, better support for Shockwave Director and RealPlayer, new toolbar buttons for New Tab and Close Tab, automatic files saving without a Save dialog, Rendezvous support, and a host of other features and additions. Highly recommended. [ Posted at 8:23 AM | Permalink ] Apple releases Mac OS X 10.2.3 ... and like any good OS update, I don't notice any differences. However, Apple says 10.2.3 adds an unbelievable number of changes and fixes, including better support for force Feedback-based USB devices, better digital camera support in iPhoto and Image Capture, new disc burning drivers for additional third-party CD-RW drives, a zero all data feature in Disk Utility, improved results for applications that switch emulated address spaces such as Connectix Virtual PC, improved display of fonts via the Microsoft Word Font Toolbar, improved keyboard navigation behavior in Column view of Finder, and includes OpenGL 1.4 which contains improvements for all systems. Mac OS X 10.2.3 is available via Software Update. [ Posted at 8:20 AM | Permalink ]
