How Cowpland killed Corel
Keith and I attended a Corel WordPerfect demo a few years back at PC Expo or COMDEX (I can't remember which) and were amazed by how many unique and cool features the product had when compared to Microsoft Word. Excited about the possibilities, we asked the company what it was going to do to fight Microsoft and try and regain some marketshare for the one-time market leader. Absolutely nothing, we were told; this product is for existing WordPerfect customers only. Shaking our heads, we left, wondering what the hell had gone wrong at Corel. Well, wonder no more. Thanks to this excellent canada.com article, which traces the rise and fall of Corel, it's clear now that the company lost any vision it once had by the mid-1990's and has spent the time since coasting. Let's hope WordPerfect has a better fate than Corel (and, before it, Novell) offered now that the company has been sold.
