"Phoebe" = Red Hat Linux 8.1
So the latest Red Hat beta will indeed be marketed as version 8.1 when it's released in April. It features an enhanced BlueCurve GUI, an updated Linux 2.4.20-2. kernel, Nautilus 2.1.5 file manager, and new features such as font viewing, the ability to burn files to CDs, a new themes applet, an updated Mozilla 1.2 browser and KDE 3.1 and GNOME 2.2 graphical desktops.

New PowerBook G4 on the way!
I was flying to Las Vegas for CES when Steve Jobs gave his MacWorld keynote, but as soon as I arrived in town that night, I went online to check out the new machines and immediately purchased a new 12" PowerBook G4 to replace my aging G3 500 iBook. The unit I ordered includes an 867 MHz G4 processor, 640 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive, and a slot-loading DVD-burning SuperDrive, all for about $2200 (Here are the specs in PDF). Good stuff, and exactly the machine I was looking for. It's going to take a few weeks to arrive, however.

Macworld stuff
I've been traveling a lot lately, so it's time to catch up. Earlier this week, Apple held its annual MacWorld San Francisco trade show, and the company had big news. First, it introduced new aluminum PowerBook G4 laptops in 12" and 17" variants; the 12" is literally a G4 iBook and the 17" is the laptop equivalent of the Ford Excursion. On the software front, Apple unveiled its Safari Web browser, which is curiously based on KHTML (from KDE) and not Mozilla; a presentation application called Keynote, and Final Cut Express, a $300 version of Final Cut Pro. The company also previewed iPhoto 2, iMovie 3, and iDVD 3, which, together with the already released iTunes 3, will be sold as a package called iLife.

.Mac address book goes live
Not a terribly big deal, but here it is. Later today, of course, Olympian Steve Jobs will speak down to us mere mortals at MacWorld SFO.

iCal updated to 1.0.2
My, that was quick, but then as I noted below, iCal 1.0.1 is embarrassingly buggy. Apple iCal 1.0.2 provides a number of performance and stability enhancements, and improved support for importing vCal and Entourage information, the company says. I'm installing it now.
