About this siteFor six years, the Internet Nexus served as my technology blog, but I've since started blogging at the SuperSite Blog instead. If you're looking for the blog, please head there. --Paul Friday, May 16, 2003The most boring blog in the worldThe New Yorks Times has a story about the the dullest blog in the world, which curiously isn't about Joe but should be. :) [ Posted at 9:11 AM | Permalink ]
Thursday, May 15, 2003Carmack on DOOM IIIGamespot and Gamespy cover a talk id Software programming guru John Carmack gave this week at E3. Among the DOOM III details he reveals: Id is using motion capture to animate humans but is still doing monsters by hand, they're debating how to handle saved games (any time you want vs. at specific points only), and a debate over performance issues: Carmack favors scaling resolution as the best means to increase performance without killing graphics quality, but he's undecided on whether the user will be able to turn off shadows, since they're central to the game's dramatic scenes. Wednesday, May 14, 2003Unreal Tournament coming this fallMy son Mark and I have recently acquired new appreciation for Unreal Tournament 2003 (Unreal 2 still sucks, though I did finish it) and now comes word of Unreal Tournament 2004, due this fall. UT2K4 will include all of the content from UT2003, plus the two free bonus packs that were released for that game, but also a bevy of new features, such as the return of Assault Mode (from the original UT), Onslaught Mode (a new multi-player oriented combat game type on custom-built large-scale maps featuring awesome new weapons and land- and air-based vehicles), live voice chat over LAN and internet with 3D audio, the return of fan-favorite Unreal characters including the Skaarj, the Necris and the infamous Xan Kriegor, 20 new maps featuring tons of new textures, new static meshes and new music, and UnrealTV, a new match broadcast system that will allow hundreds of people to view an UT2K4 match with minimal performance impact on game server. Also, UT2K4 will feature a completely redesigned user interface (UI) that will be easier to navigate and support context-sensitive menus, an in-game login menu (to improve team balancing) and an improved server browser with enhanced server filtering options. The underlying user interface system has been reengineered to be easier for Mod authors to build menus and implement their own UI designs. Sounds good to me! [ Posted at 1:28 PM | Permalink ]
Tuesday, May 13, 2003Frequency 1.1 outThis great Mac OS X-based blogger client has been updated to version 1.1 and is now available in an XP version as well, but it still doesn't support post reviewing. Hopefully the next version, due in June, will. [ Posted at 12:04 AM | Permalink ]
Monday, May 12, 2003Glass half full much? You run an OS that has provided you with 113 security fixes, critical updates, and feature updates over an 18 month period. Are you ... a) pleased that you're running a modern OS which can automatically download and apply such fixes ... or ... b) freaked out because this OS is obviously pretty broken if it needed that many fixes? If you answered "a" you understand why Windows XP is so excellent. If you answered "b," you're an idiot. This guy is an idiot. [ Posted at 11:55 PM | Permalink ] New Eudora beta features anti-spam tools It's Mac-only right now, but the new Eudora 6 beta release features the new SpamWatch spam filtering tool, which is highly regarded by testers, a new Content Concentrator feature, and an interesting new OS X-only mailbox drawer feature. I'll check it out. [UPDATE: It blows. Predictable.] [ Posted at 5:04 PM | Permalink ] Strongbad I've been watching this every week for several months now, and it's outrageous. Watch 'em all, simply classic. Let's see ... what he's ... uh... cooking up tonight... [ Posted at 3:31 PM | Permalink ] New blog! I've combined the Web sites for my companion books Great Digital Media with Windows XP and Windows XP Home Networking, using the blog format to keep content fresh and up-to-date. Check out my new blog, imaginatively titled Windows XP Digital Media and Home Networking, where I'll eventually start posting timely and important content related to, yup, you guessed it, Frank Stallone. [ Posted at 10:39 AM | Permalink ] Carve up Apple? This article makes a compelling case for breaking Apple into two companies and nicely dispells the notion that the company is doing just fine. [ Posted at 9:55 AM | Permalink ] So.... If MacObserver says Macs are slower, is it finally true? I've been saying for some time that Macs perform much more slowly than PCs and catching a lot of flak for it. But this week, Mac fan boy site Mac Observer actually compared an old (PIII) PC to an old (G4 667) Power Mac and discovered--surprise, surprise--that the PC kicks butt. Just so I'm clear: This is now accepted as fact, right? Favorite line: "It's as if Mac pundits have their heads so far up Apple's ass that they can't see things for what they are. Current Macintosh systems are slow compared to current Microsoft XP systems." That one's for you, Gene. [ Posted at 1:12 AM | Permalink ]
