Apple inadvertantly leaks G5 specs
After all the years of secrecy, legally threatening fan-boy sites, and taking employees to court for leaking details about upcoming products, one must find it ironic that it was Apple itself that spilled the beans on the PowerMac G5 before anyone else did. According to a mistaken post on the Apple.com Web site, the PowerMac G5 will ship in 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 GHz dual-processor configurations (compared to a measly 1.0, 1.25, and 1.42 today), and feature up to a 1 GHz processor bus, up to 8 GB of DDR SDRAM, Fast Serial ATA hard drives, AGP 8x, three PCI or PCI-X slots, three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 and two FireWire 400 ports, optional Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme, and optical and analog audio in and out.

Masters of Doom
This book is awesome, and I read it in just two days. My only small complaint: It includes no photos or screenshots at all, a bizarre omission. But it's well-written and wonderfully researched, thanks to the willfull participation of everyone involved. Buy it now.

Toronto journalist tells it like it is
And yes, the Mac community will label this article "FUD," but the guy makes some good points. "The Macintosh is slow, horribly expensive and I'm not going to take it anymore," writes Dale Tournemille, a ten-year Mac veteran. Tournemille correctly notes that the megahertz myth is itself a myth, Macs lack important compatibility with many popular Web sites, and PCs are just far too cheap to stop looking the other way. On the other hand, Macs are cool. But then this will be the least violent reaction you'll see online to this guy's article.

Why Macs suck
Thanks Grant. Some Mac humor to start the day. I particularly like the Jack f'ing Terrier bit.

Setting Sun?
This is an uncharacteristically good article from Wired about the problems facing Sun Microsystems. But then Gary Rivlin knows his stuff.

The limitations of Linux
It's simultaneously amusing and frustrating when a mainstream publication like Forbes finally picks up on what I've been saying all along--Linux is nice, but it's not a panacea, and it certainly won't magically solve every business' problems. "There are costs and limitations associated with Linux that don't typically make headlines," writes Forbes' Lisa DiCarlo. Subscribe to WinInfo, child. I've been discussing this for years, before it got trendy.

Apple reiterates iTunes for Windows release by end of year
In this MacWorld UK interview, Apple director of marketing consumer applications Peter Lowe discusses iTunes for Windows and a few other interesting tidbits. The Windows iTunes version will be out by the end of the year, he says, or about six months later than it should be completed, in my opinion. The new iPods are selling well (26,000 units) in their first week of availability; it'd be interested to see how many of those sales were previous iPod users however. Lowe's most interesting comment, however was about future drivers for tech innovation. "In future the real sea-changes in our industry will be driven by things that truly empower users, rather than tech-fads," he said. I assume by tech-fads, he means colored plastic.

Money and happiness
Thanks Keith. As I suspected, money can buy happiness. The bad news is that it essentially takes $1.5 million to move you from a point where you’re unhappy to a point where you’re happy. That makes me very unhappy.

How Cowpland killed Corel
Keith and I attended a Corel WordPerfect demo a few years back at PC Expo or COMDEX (I can't remember which) and were amazed by how many unique and cool features the product had when compared to Microsoft Word. Excited about the possibilities, we asked the company what it was going to do to fight Microsoft and try and regain some marketshare for the one-time market leader. Absolutely nothing, we were told; this product is for existing WordPerfect customers only. Shaking our heads, we left, wondering what the hell had gone wrong at Corel. Well, wonder no more. Thanks to this excellent canada.com article, which traces the rise and fall of Corel, it's clear now that the company lost any vision it once had by the mid-1990's and has spent the time since coasting. Let's hope WordPerfect has a better fate than Corel (and, before it, Novell) offered now that the company has been sold.
