Microsoft rival turns sights toward Office

Todd Bishop in the Seattle PI:
Some people might shy away from head-to-head competition with Microsoft Corp. But Michael Robertson is taking the opposite approach -- making a habit of challenging the company in areas it dominates.

Robertson, the tech entrepreneur whose "Lindows" operating system landed him in a big trademark dispute with Microsoft, is now rolling out a series of programs to compete with the Redmond company's highly profitable Office software.

Why target that market?

"Because that's where the money is," Robertson explained in an interview last week, echoing bank robber Willie Sutton's famous refrain. "I'm sure some people in Redmond see Michael as having a grudge against Microsoft, but in fact I don't. ... To me, that's where the opportunities are, in the proven markets."
The term "enigmatic" doesn't even begin to describe Michael Robertson. I guess I sort of like what he's done with Linspire, but it's unclear to me how much traction Web-based word processors are ever going to have.
