Now you're just being silly

Linux-Watch suggests that the way to get Windows Vista "back on track" is to open source it:
If Microsoft really wants to make Vista a great desktop operating system, it should open-source it.

I'll bet you think I'm being sarcastic. I'm not. I'm quite serious.

Vista is a mess.
Fair enough. (The article even links to my "Where Vista Fails" rant as evidence that Vista is off-kilter.)

Using the same logic, let's fix Linux too. After all, we've sat through several years of predictions about "[insert year here] will be the year of desktop Linux." It's never happened, so Linux is a mess. I think the Linux community should hand Linux over to a commercial software company and let them sell the heck out of it. After all, I just learned that Windows sales in the previous quarter were up 7.5 percent to $$3.19 billion. Surely a commercial software company like Microsoft could take the mess that is Linux and turn it into something wonderful.

But yeah, I'm being sarcastic here to make a point. Microsoft isn't going open source, so this kind of article is both pointless and silly.
